Focusing on climate change, coastal processes, and hazards prepares students for positions with natural resource planning, management and regulatory agencies, or with private consulting firms engaging in such activities as policy development and implementation, impact assessment, planning and monitoring. Students gain a thorough understanding of the ocean and coastal environment and become qualified to collect, analyze, and interpret natural resource information. Students also learn about the legal and institutional structure for coastal management, and social and economic characteristics of coastal regions and peoples. Through their choice of electives, students may further emphasize coastal zone management, marine protected areas, coastal watershed or wetlands management and restoration, land use planning, coastal hazards analysis and planning, climate impacts and policy, community-based management, or similar areas.
